New Experiences through
Technology
Studies estimate that in the Philippines there are half a million people who are blind, and many more who are visually impaired but there
are currently no schools in the area that provide services to youth with handicaps. Recent technology has opened up the possibilities
of computer technology to those who are blind. By providing training in this technology, we can open doors and opportunities for blind
youth and by using peer to peer mentoring this program is building not only knowledge but relationships as well.
The goal of this program is to use technology to give the handicapped youth the opportunity to interact with their peers and other
members of the community while increasing their knowledge not only about computers but other subjects as well through the hands on
activities made possible through technology.
This is an opportunity and learning experience for all involved since the sighted students are given the opportunity to learn about
what is like to be blind and increase their knowledge and computer skills by teaching others and learning how to type blind.
The blind youth are able to interact with youth their age and learn about computers while sharing their skills and talents including
reading and writing braille.
